What is an EDL change list?

An EDL change list is a detailed report of all differences between two versions of a cut: which shots were added, removed, or modified, how timecodes shifted (in frames), whether transitions or effects changed, and the overall sequence length change.

Why do I need frame-level precision?

Post-production is frame-accurate work. When a shot timecode shifts by even one frame, it affects visual effects alignment, color timing, and VFX vendor deliverables. Frame-level deltas let you track exactly what changed.

How does the tool match shots between versions?

The tool uses a two-pass matching algorithm: first by clip/source name (most reliable), then by timeline position (sequence order) for unmatched items. This handles reordering, insertions, and deletion gracefully.

What change types does it detect?

It detects: added events, removed events, record-in timecode changes, record-out timecode changes, source timecode changes, duration changes (frames added/removed), and transition/effect type changes.

Who benefits from this tool?

Can I use it for sequences at different frame rates?

The tool assumes both EDLs use the same frame rate. If your EDLs were created at different frame rates, you'll need to conform one to the other's frame rate first before comparing.

Understanding Your Change Report

The Summary Stats

Sequence Start/End: Shows the overall sequence length change. If your sequence grew by 120 frames, you'll see that here - useful for budget and delivery planning.

Change Categories

Added: Events that exist only in the new EDL. Use this to identify new shots that vendors need to create or conform.
Removed: Events that existed in the old EDL but are gone. Tell vendors they can archive or repurpose this work.
Modified: Events in both versions but with timing or effect changes. This is where most of your work happens - refiles, retimes, effect tweaks.
Unchanged: Same shot, same timing, no changes. Hidden by default to focus you on what matters.

The Frame Delta Column

This shows how many frames a change moved the clip:

+12f: The shot moved 12 frames later in the sequence
-8f: The shot moved 8 frames earlier
0f (duration change): The shot stayed in place but got shorter or longer
